It Starts with Sustainability

Our Nafion™ materials manufacturing facility features a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis system that captures wastewater from the site, filters it, and ultimately recycles the water for further use. The water exiting the system is of demineralized quality—an impressive level of purification to achieve from wastewater. Testing of the system shows that fluorinated organic chemicals are removed at an efficiency of greater than 99%.

Proven to Reduce Environmental Impact

Chemours’ new multi-step process for recycling Nafion™ ion-exchange membranes, previously used in chlor-alkali electrolysis systems, demonstrates that all contaminants in the recycled material meet commercial specifications for virgin material.

Chemours’ Nafion™ ion exchange membranes play a critical role in driving the hydrogen economy and helping to create a more sustainable future. In an effort to advance the energy transition, we recently launched operations at our joint venture with BWT FUMATECH Mobility GmbH, under the name of THE Mobility F.C. Membranes Company GmbH – A BWT Chemours Company. The 50-50 joint venture focuses on integrating the unique capabilities, resources, and technological expertise of each company to elevate and accelerate the capacity to manufacture fuel cell and humidifier membranes for the mobility applications of long-term customers. By leveraging the best of each partner’s complementary assets, the joint venture will expedite the supply of heavy-duty fuel cell membranes to OEMs, helping to meet the demand for these membranes that are critical to fully scaling the global hydrogen economy.
